Traveling Tips

Traveling with Type 1 Diabetes requires a bit of extra planning, but with the right preparations, you can enjoy your trip with confidence and peace of mind. Here are some key tips to help make your travels easier and safer:

1. Plan Ahead:

• Research the healthcare facilities at your destination, especially if you’re traveling internationally.

• Make sure you have enough insulin, test strips, and supplies to last your entire trip, plus a little extra in case of delays or emergencies. (see example packing list post)

• Be prepared for airport security. You can request TSA assistance through TSA Cares, this is not available at all airports.

2. Carry a Doctor’s Note:

• A doctor’s note detailing your condition and the medical necessity of your supplies can help avoid delays at security checkpoints, especially when flying.

3. Pack Smart:

• Keep your insulin, syringes, glucose meter, and other supplies in your carry-on bag, as temperature fluctuations in checked luggage can damage your medication. This is also important to have in case you are stuck in the plane longer than expected.

• Pack extra snacks and emergency glucose sources (like glucose tablets or juice) in case of hypoglycemia.

4. Monitor Blood Sugar Regularly:

• Travel can disrupt your routine, so check your blood sugar more frequently to stay on top of any changes in activity level, food intake, or time zone adjustments. When we traveled out west years ago, we realized the elevation had a big effect on his glucose levels.

5. Time Zone Adjustments:

• If you’re traveling across time zones, you may need to adjust your insulin doses or the timing of injections. Work with your healthcare team to create a plan.

6. Be Prepared for Emergencies:

• Carry a list of your medications, emergency contacts, and your healthcare provider’s contact information in case you need assistance abroad.

7. Stay Active & Hydrated:

• Physical activity and hydration are key in managing Type 1 Diabetes while traveling. Plan for regular exercise, and keep water handy to help manage your blood sugar levels.

8. Stay Calm and Enjoy Your Trip:

• While it’s important to stay vigilant, remember that with preparation and the right mindset, traveling with Type 1 Diabetes is completely manageable. Enjoy the experience and embrace the adventure!

By taking a proactive approach, you can make sure your trip goes smoothly and focus on making great memories!
