Travel with Type 1 Diabetes: Managing Lows on the Go ✈️

Travel with Type 1 Diabetes isn’t always easy—but it’s absolutely possible with preparation and the right mindset. As a T1D family, we’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) what works and what doesn’t when you’re far from home and a low hits unexpectedly.

One of the questions we’re often asked is:
What’s your favorite way to treat a low?

Our son’s go-to low treatments are:

  • Glucose tabs
  • Glucose gummies
  • Juice boxes

We also carry peanut butter crackers to help stabilize blood sugar levels afterward with a bit of protein.

🚗 That Time He Went Low in a National Park…

We love traveling—especially road trips to National Parks. But on three separate trips, our son has gone low in the car, not even on a hike. Each time, it caught us off guard.

He’d start feeling sick to his stomach, and because we were driving and out of cell service range, we’d assume it was motion sickness. But with no Dexcom signal reading (thanks to being in remote areas), we didn’t realize it was a low blood sugar episode until later.

These are the moments when Type 1 Diabetes feels so unfair. You plan an epic vacation—and T1D still finds a way to interrupt it. But you keep going.

🧳 You Can Travel with T1D — Here’s Proof

I remember when he was first diagnosed, my first thought was,
“We can never travel again.”
But here’s the truth: you can. And you should.

Travel with Type 1 Diabetes just means being extra prepared:

  • Bring backup supplies
  • Pack extra snacks
  • Expect the unexpected
  • Don’t rely on tech alone—bring manual testers and extra batteries
