Sick-Day Rules

Illness raises blood sugar even when nobody is eating. The rules change — here is the shape of the plan.

  1. Never skip insulin

This is the one that catches families out. Insulin needs usually go up during illness, even with no appetite.
  2. Check more often

Blood sugar and ketones both, at the interval your care team specified for sick days.
  3. Keep fluids going

Small sips, often. Sugar-free if the number is high, carb-containing if it is low or they cannot eat.
  4. Know when to call

Your team gave you a threshold for calling. Write it on the sheet in the supply cabinet before you need it.
