How to Treat a High
High and climbing? Work through these steps — and use the correction your care team set for you, not a number from the internet.
Confirm the number
If the reading comes from a CGM and something feels off, confirm with a finger stick before acting on it.Check for ketones
Any unexplained high, and any high with nausea or vomiting, means checking ketones. Ketones change the plan entirely.Correct using your own ratios
Use the correction factor your care team set. Do not stack corrections — insulin already given is still working.Hydrate and re-check
Water helps. Re-check at the interval your care team gave you, and look for a site or pump problem if the number will not come down.
Call your care team
Vomiting, trouble breathing, confusion, or a high that will not come down after a correction needs a call — not another dose.
This is educational information from one T1D family, not medical advice. Your care team sets your doses, thresholds and timings — follow their plan over anything here.
